Sosan’s Garden of Hope: How the Community Resilience and Livelihoods Project Transformed a Family’s Life in Panjshir

Life Before the Community Resilience and Livelihoods Project

Sosan, aged 34, is the head of her household, caring for four children, including a son and daughter with disabilities. Her husband is unemployed and struggles with poor mental health, leaving Sosan to shoulder the responsibilities of providing for the family. Life in Melima village, nestled in the mountains of Panjshir, was harsh and uncertain. With no steady source of income and limited knowledge of agriculture, Sosan faced daily struggles to feed her children and keep her family afloat.

“Before this program, I did not know how to provide food for my family,” Sosan recalls, her voice tinged with the memory of those difficult days. “Now, with my garden, we sustain ourselves and I even earn some income.”

A Turning Point

Sosan’s life began to change when she joined the Community Resilience and Livelihoods Project’s Training program. Driven by the need to support her family and motivated by the knowledge shared during the sessions, she decided to apply what she learned and start her own kitchen garden.

With patience, dedication, and guidance from the social organizers, Sosan transformed a small patch of land into a flourishing garden. Today, she grows vegetables and fruits that not only feed her family but also generate income, giving her household a newfound sense of security.

Life Today

Sosan’s garden has become more than just a source of food—it is a symbol of hope, resilience, and empowerment. Her morale has improved, and she is recognized as a motivator and role model for other women in Melima village.

When you meet Sosan, her determination is evident. She radiates positive energy, and her face lights up with hope as she talks about her children and dreams for the future. “I want my children to study and for my village to prosper,” she says, her eyes sparkling with ambition.

Her family echoes her optimism. They feel that the program has changed their lives for the better. Social organizers highlight Sosan’s story as a prime example of how training and capacity-building initiatives can empower individuals and strengthen community resilience.

Strategic Impact

Sosan’s journey reflects the broader rationale of the Community Resilience and Livelihoods Project approach to equip vulnerable women with practical skills and knowledge to improve household food security, generate income, and strengthen their resilience in a sustainable way. By investing in targeted training and capacity-building, including kitchen gardening, health and nutrition awareness, livelihood development, financial literacy, and community participation. Through another pillar of the project, women are supported with social grants to help them through the harsh winter season. The project has now introduced women economic activities like poultry rearing which are designed to successfully promote women’s resilience within the cultural and societal constraints.

Through this holistic approach, CRLP continues to empower women like Sosan to become agents of change within their families and communities, contributing to stronger and more resilient communities over time.
